Moving Checklist

How to Get Organized before Your Melbourne Move – A Complete Moving Checklist from Pinder Tower Removals

Pinder Towers Removals understands the stress homeowners go through when conducting Furniture Removals in Melbourne; however, the more organised you are, the easier the move.  Starting early means that you eliminate stress, as well as being able to kick into the spirit that this time is a great opportunity to get rid of clutter, improving your new home with what “really” doesn’t need to be moved. Pinder Towers offers the following Moving Checklist to help lighten your load.

6 to 8 Weeks Prior To Your Relocation

  • Contact your real estate agent or builder when you can stop by their office to pick up the keys to your new home. This will allow you the convenience of knowing when you can physically begin to move.
  • If you are relocating to a new state, arrange for your relocation company, plan your route, stops and your accommodation.
  • Begin to scan your important documents, medical records, etc. and save them on a hard drive and / or secure the documents and records in your cloud storage.
  • Contact your children’s school and inform them of your relocation.  Have all records transferred to their new school.
  • Start to de-clutter.  Go through your items in each room, room by room, sorting what you’ll take and what you’ll donate or try to get a bit of cash through a yard sale. When done inside the home, begin on the outside: the garden shed, roof cavity, garage, under the house, etc.
  • If having a yard sale, then begin to plan your yard sale.
  • Arrange for a skip bin to pick up any rubbish that you’ll be getting clearing from your home.
  • Take all recyclable items to your local recycle plant.
  • If you will need storage for your furniture and belongings then arrange for the storage.  If you have a relocation company handling your move, first check with the company to enquire if they offer storage facilities.
  • Take the measurements of your new home.  Measure where your appliances will go, and ensure that your appliances will fit.  Also, measure the windows and doors to ensure that you will be able to fit items into your new home.
  • If you are moving across the state, arrange for accommodations.  If you are moving with pets, consider your pets, as well.  It is important that you ensure their safety during the move.
  • Check to see if you have the owner’s manual to your appliances for instructions on how to stabilise your appliances while relocation.

4 to 5 Weeks before Your Relocation

  • If you are renting, notify your landlord that you will be relocating and inform them of your move out date, as well as to schedule a property inspection.
  • Schedule your utility disconnect and re-connection services from your old home to your new home.
  • Arrange to have your home, pay TV,  internet, cable, etc. transferred to your new home.
  • Start to gather your boxes and packing materials that you’ll need for your move.  If you are planning to move yourself, then organise your moving van / truck hire, as well.
  • Aside from sorting and packing, cleaning is also a necessity when relocating.  Start to make less trips to the grocery store by using up things in the freezer, fridge and cupboards.

2 to 3 Weeks before Your Move

  • Start to pack early, labeling all boxes with the contents of the boxes and the room where the box belongs.  This will help to ensure that the unpacking and sorting is easier.
  • If you are moving into a building that have flights of stairs, then book the elevator.
  • Contact your insurance company and arrange for a policy on your new property.
  • Pack your passports, important documents and valuables together in a container to carry with you.
  • If you have hired a removalist to perform your move, then make arrangements to be at your old and new address on moving day.  If for some reason, you cannot be present, then make arrangements for someone else to be at the properties.
  • Return all borrowed items, including library books.
  • Arrange for a change of address, as well as inform account subscriptions like magazines to be transferred to your new place.

1 Week Prior to Your Move

  • Begin to pack your essentials box so that you aren’t sorting through your boxes in a panic to find necessities the first day into your home.  The kit should include toiletries, first aid kit, medicines, plastic eating utensils, change of clothes, etc.
  • Get your gardening equipment ready for the move.  Drain the fluids and liquids to avoid fire, as well as damage due to leaking.
  • Remove your prescriptions, etc. from your medicine cabinet and pack them in a separate box well out of reach of your children.
  • Remove the blinds or curtains if bringing them to your new home.  If curtains, consider having them professionally cleaned.
  • Clean your barbecue and prepare your gas bottles to move to your new home.
  • Begin to dismantle largely and bulky items like your garden furniture, tables, swing sets, trampolines, etc.  Label all of the parts and the joints so that the items are easy to put back together.
  • Make easy to serve meals like sandwiches, etc. for moving day.
  • Empty and defrost the fridge and freezer no less than 24 hours prior to moving day.
  • Pack up all your electrical appliances like your stereo, TV, surround sound systems, etc.
  • Pack a box of your kitchen essentials that you’ll need immediately at your new home:  detergent, towels, snacks, sugar, coffee, etc.

Moving Day

  • Protect the floors, corners of the home, stair rails, etc. with moving blankets, cardboard, etc. to protect them from damage.
  • Alert the movers of what boxes should be loaded first.
  • Do a last cleaning and final walk-through of the home.
  • Take your electrical garage door opener from your vehicle and place it on the counter of the home.
  • Disconnect the water and electricity.
